Wings-n-Things:
A Photographic Exploration

Julie Parker

The structures we see in the natural world reveal a stunning array of texture, pattern and color.  I marvel at the delicate things we see and I’m curious about the progression of how these flora and fauna have survived in time, where they have been and how they will change.  There must be a reason why the Luna Moth has “eyes” on its back and wings made of tiny twin tipped feathers.  There must be a reason that the dragonfly (whose unique wing-patterns are like fingerprints) have side to side symmetry in their wing patterns but have substantially similar (but not symmetric) wings front to back. There must be a reason why a particular flower’s stamen includes a hinged connection between its anther and filament, yet another’s does not.

The closer I look the more I see! These barely visible, seemingly insignificant details belong to a world that coincides with us yet is largely unobserved due to a mismatch in scale – our world being measured in millimeters to miles, their world being measured in millimeters to microns.  It makes me wonder what else is out there that we can’t see.  Could we be the unobserved, seemingly insignificant details for something on a scale too large for us to comprehend?

These images celebrate our fascination with the natural world.  I often use an overlay of multiple photographs that blend pattern and line to suggest a playful movement and vibrancy.  I am interested in engaging with images on multiple levels: the geometrical aspect of a line, the color and balance of a composition and the mind-blowing intricacies of natural structure and form.  I try to capture a sense of fluidity and motion that echoes the dynamics of nature. By creating layers of complexity my hope is that the viewer will come away with a recognition and appreciation for the magic all around us.
